I’m passionate about this topic because I remember all the hard work that went into writing a new sermon every week.
The average pastor spends 10 ½ hours writing, preparing, and presenting their weekend message. That’s a lot of time, research, knowledge, prayer, and preparation.
Almost as soon as it was over, it was time to work on the next one.
All of that work is kind of like a “sunk cost.” It’s already done. The time and effort is spent.
Why not continue to leverage all that time, effort, prayer, and planning and get more mileage out of your message?
Instead of just thinking of content delivery, shift your thinking toward content distribution.
Instead of just creating more and more, repurpose some of what you’ve already done.
The odds are that you have quite a few members who weren’t even in attendance to hear your weekend message. And of those that were present, research tells us that they only heard about 10% of it.
Repeating your weekend message isn’t necessarily repeating as much as it is reaching.
Here are seven things you can do with a message once it’s been preached.
1. Upload the audio file to a podcast.
41% of people listen to podcasts monthly. That’s 116 million people. That’s no small pool, and people are looking for good content.
Tip: Make sure your message titles are clear enough to show up in search results. (example: “What the Bible had to say about depression” vs “David’s Distress”)
2. Post the message to YouTube.
Did you know that Youtube is considered the 2nd most utilized search engine? People are looking for answers, and they’re looking on YouTube. Again, make sure it has a search friendly title, a good thumbnail, and a description that makes sense.
3. Write a short summary and include it in your church email newsletter.
People can scan what they missed or quickly review what they heard.
Tip: If you have a manuscript or make a transcript from your audio, you can literally copy/paste sections of your message.
4. Ask a staff member or volunteer to record a 3-minute recap or takeaway.
Put this in your email newsletter or share on social media. This doubles as a great way to feature volunteers, and share their unique perspectives.
5. Create a couple of short video clips to share on social media.
You don’t need anything fancy. Simple iMovie features will do the job here.
6. Create a graphic of a notable quote to share on social media.
If you have a Canva account, you can create templates and simple change the copy each week. Keep it simple.
7. Get a transcript of the message and turn it into a blog post.
Use temi.com or rev.com then do a little light editing. Post to your website and make sure it has a search friendly title and description. When you’re done with a series, collect all the transcripts and create an eBook. If it was a really good sermon series, consider self-publishing a book on the topic.
This may sound like a lot of work.
But there are likely volunteers in your church who could help with this. They can maximize the message and work to get the content you’ve already created shared with more people.
As they think beyond Sunday, you’ll engage more and more people with an important message.
